Childhood Severe Thrombocytosis at a Single Secondary Community Hospital
Oh Seung-Hwan

Abstract
Purpose: Childhood severe thrombocytosis is not a rare finding. But there are a few guidelines or reports for it in Korea. The purpose of this study is to know its present clinical manifestation and to help their management.

Methods: I collected the clinical informations of children who have visited at YongIn severance Hospital, YongIn, Korea from January 2005 to December 2007 and whose peripheral blood platelet count is more than 900¡¿109/L. Their features such as age, sex, combined disease, laboratory findings, disease course were reviewed retrospectively.

Results: There were 30 patients. They are all secondary thrombocytosis patients. It was more common in the group of infant (56.7%), female (56.7%). Most common cause of it was infection (70.0%) and respiratory tract infection was found in more than half of them (53.3%). Iron deficiency anemia was present in 26.6% of them. Platelet count was improved in almost all of them (80.8%) within 3 weeks. There was no complication due to thrombocytosis in patients who have not had antiplatelet therapy.

Conclusion: This study showed that it is usually benign and developed in very young age and secondary. Treatment for it was not necessary except for Kawasaki disease. Further study should be done to establish the treatment guideline for thrombocytosis.
